Where did you go for undergrad and what did you major in?

Amity University, Noida, India. My major was in Engineering in Solar and Alternative Energy.

Why did you choose to attend DURP (Department of Urban and Regional Planning) at UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign)? How did you end up in such an offbeat and unconventional career?

I was particularly interested in courses such as Urban Design and Planning, Sustainable Design Principles and Energy Planning & Built Environment, which would augment my existing capabilities. Moreover, the Urban Design workshop, Environmental Planning workshop and the Sustainable Planning seminar would enhance my practical skills. Guidance by professors such as Devin Lavigne and Bruce Hannon, who are experts in the fields of energy systems, environmental design, planning and modeling, aided by the quality research undertaken at DURP, would provide me with in-depth knowledge and invaluable grooming in this field. I am especially intrigued by the research done by Professor Brian Deal in the field of “Building Codes, Energy, and the Environment” and that’s when I decided I wanted to join DURP.

Also, Professor Rob Olshansky sent me a personalized admission letter where he wrote that he wishes I join DURP and that was amazing. DURP is a small, close-knit community and I’m glad I’m here today.

What are your career ambitions?

I will concentrate my studies towards Sustainable Design and Development at DURP. My ultimate aim is to develop planning methods and techniques to effectively engineer and design sustainable environments. I hope to be an enabler and consultant in the field of sustainable urbanization. To gain the required expertise to mitigate climate change, I plan to initially work in an established sustainable urban solutions firm with the spirit of an intrapreneur, bringing creative solutions to technical problems with the skills I will acquire in this course.
