Name of the organization, City

TERI (The Energy and Resource Institute), New Delhi

Duration of the internship

1 May – 28 May (4 weeks)

How big was the office? Team strength?

The office was large enough to accommodate 250 employees. There is a library in another building large enough to accommodate 100 people.

The office is located at the great INDIAN HABITAT CENTRE, near lodhi road. If you had visited the Indian Habitat Centre you could find a pleasant and beautiful environment to work.

Application procedure. Internship contact details

I got this internship through a personal contact. Also these institutes generally do not provide training programs. But if you have some contacts you can apply for the same.

Duration in weeks. No. of days/week. Timings

The Training Program was for 4 weeks where I have to work six days a week. You can leave early if you wish to, only after informing your mentor and reporting him the word to have done.

Accommodation: how, where, how was it?

I was staying with my cousin who resides near Lodhi load. Hence there was no problem with the accommodation. But some of my friends who were also interning in Delhi stayed at a PG located in Kalkaji.

Hence it was not difficult either for them since you can easily locate a PG at Nehru Place, Kalkaji, Lajpat Nagar etc.

First impression. First day, formalities etc.

This was my 1st internship experience. As a novice I had no idea that how my training program could go well. It wasn’t hard to locate the office since the entrance was at the ground floor and when you are at Indian habitat Centre, it is not difficult to find out places.

When I entered through the main entrance door, the ambience of the front lobby was pleasing. The lady on the reception asked me to sign the entry records and gave a call to my mentor that I have arrived.

Later she instructed me that my mentor is on her way and till that time I have to fill some applications. I filled those applications and after all the document verification I was issue an identity card. In the mean while I was asked to meet my mentor upstairs. I went upstairs and the aura of the office amazed me.

You have to swap the card to enter the main office. I entered the office and met my mentor. I had a great interaction with my mentor. My mentor informed me the code of conduct and the field of the work her office deals with. I was asked to visit the library where I was provided a table with full wi-fi connectivity.

The timings of the office were like normal office hours i.e. 9:00 am to 5:00 pm where 1 hour was given as a break for lunch time.

Main tasks (in detail)

TERI is a well recognized NGO which has its main motive to conserve and save the environment. So the main task was in concern to environment protection. My mentor asked me that what work I would like to toil with.

I said since I am a first year law student, hence was not well versed with law work and asked her to provide me with some research work on environment. On such response she asked me to make a report on climate change in reference to various industries. I was quite ecstatic with my new task as it seemed to be an easy work.

I stated my work on the first day itself. I went to the library. The librarian provided me with a table and a large collection of books for my research work.

The amazing fact was that they had every data related to Indian as well as foreign industries like their pollution emissions data, carbon credit data and many other more. Other than that the e-library have subscriptions to more than 20 online journals which could be used for an extensive research.

As I was working on my research paper, my research skills were nourishing. The work I have been though made me realize the value of the depleting environment and how the polluting was degrading it. I made a data on various industries which contributed in the most pollution factor.

Not only the general data, I made an extensive research on series of annual report of major industries with the help of my accounting knowledge and prepared a balance sheet of each industry and their contribution to environment protection.

The work environment of TERI is really great. Almost everyone is there to help. I contacted the librarian and he assisted me to get my task done. My mentor used to call me and assisted me whenever I needed help. There were other trainees from TERI University who were also working on some or the other projects. They always aided me whenever I asked for help.

Best things? Why did you choose such an offbeat, unusual and unconventional career for internship?

The best thing which happened to me was the nurturing of research and communication skills. Interacting with professionals built a confidence inside me that it is not difficult to interact with others. Other than that I was made aware of the fact that our environment is being eaten up day by day and we need reforms to change that.

Bad things? (Nothing is all good)

Well there were no such bad things but one could say that Indian habitat Center is located at a prime location and it is difficult to find a reasonable priced restaurant nearby.

What did you do to chill? Co-interns, colleagues.

Well you can have a lot of green tea, or coffee, or milk, whatever you may like. Visitors used to visit Indian habitat Centre as a tourist spot, since it has got beauty all around it and the famous movie (Rang de Basanti) was filmed here.

Generally there is an art gallery where twice or thrice in a week exhibitions are conducted. There are some real good restaurants where at least you can have meal at least twice (since the price are quite higher). You’ve got Lodhi Park nearby and you can go and chill out there with your co-interns.

Stipend

No stipend

Anything else you’d like to tell.

If you are interning for the first time, I believe you should apt for such training programs. They help you to nourish your skills and bring the better out of you.

Biggest lessons

My first internship experience made me self dependant as I was new to Delhi. I learned that whatever could be the consequences I can confront them and succeed.
