Technologies such as Connected Mobility and Software Defined Vehicles are shaping and transforming the automotive landscape, thus offering us glimpses into the future of mobility!

Hanieffa MS, our next pathbreaker, Senior Technical Program Manager & Technical Lead at HARMAN International (Munich), is part of a team crafting next-generation, intelligent in-cabin systems that redefine how users interact with vehicles.

Hanieffa talks to Shyam Krishnamurthy from The Interview Portal about unforgettable moments in his career, delivering immersive sound experiences to one of the world’s most iconic luxury vehicles.

For students, while outcomes do matter, it’s the joy of the process, the curiosity, effort, and the evolution that truly fuel long-term success.

Hanieffa, can you share your background with our young readers?

Driven by Purpose, Shaped by Resourcefulness

My parents prioritized education above all, enrolling me in a school in Ooty despite financial constraints. That early investment exposed me to rich learning experiences like language, science, and vibrant club activities that sparked my curiosity and laid the foundation for the confident, driven individual I am today. Growing up as a millennial in the ’90s middle class household, taught me to aim high and make the most of limited resources, a mindset that continues to shape my approach even today.

What did you do for graduation/post graduation?

I pursued Bachelors in Mechatronics Engineering with a University Rank and bagged a Gold Medal. I completed Masters in CAD/CAM from VIT University with an award for excellent academic performance

What made you choose a career in Core Engineering?

Fueled by Passion, Anchored in Purpose:

Driven by a deep passion for Automotive Design, I honed my skills in Digital Product Design and Manufacturing during my Master’s at VIT University, leveraging access to advanced prototyping labs. Choosing purpose over convention, I declined IT/ITES offers to pursue a career in automotives, thereby starting as an R&D Engineer with the TVS Group. Since then, I’ve been fortunate to grow and

During my undergraduate studies, I discovered a natural passion for automotive engineering and design-oriented thinking. I realized that Digital Design and Manufacturing provides the essential tools for transforming creative concepts into tangible products. This realization inspired me to specialize in CAD/CAM, as it bridges the gap between innovative ideas and real-world applications.

The MTech in CAD/CAM program provided an in-depth focus on digital product design, emphasizing advanced topics such as user-centered design, ergonomics, and the integration of user needs into the development process. The curriculum also covered digital manufacturing, exploring a wide range of computer-aided rapid manufacturing techniques—including additive manufacturing and CNC machining—as well as traditional manufacturing processes.

During the second year of my MTech program, a select group of meritorious students were chosen to undertake research projects funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. I was honored to be selected for this prestigious initiative and appointed as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF), a role that provided both valuable research experience and a generous stipend while I continued my master’s studies. This opportunity was made possible thanks to the guidance and encouragement of my professor, Mr. K. Raja, who recognized my potential for research and recommended me for the position.

Throughout my tenure as a JRF, I conducted original research, the results of which formed the basis of my master’s thesis. The project was successfully completed and later carried forward by my junior colleagues.

Tell us about your career path after your masters

My 1st job after my masters was at Turbo Energy Limited which is a part of TVS group of companies that focuses on high precision- near net shape manufacturing of complex multi axis turbines. I was involved in tool design and R&D in manufacturing processes.

My next role at Bosch was a transformative journey that shaped my evolution from an engineer into a project manager. I began my career as a Design Engineer, where I was responsible for designing electro-mechanical components for Electronic Stability Program (ESP) products.

A pivotal chapter of my experience was working in Japan, where I gained firsthand exposure to world-class quality methodologies such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) and DRBFM (Design Review Based on Failure Mode). Mastering these tools enabled me to proactively identify and mitigate potential failure modes early in the design process, significantly reducing risks as products approached launch.

As I became proficient in these quality practices, I took on the additional responsibility of training and mentoring my colleagues, helping to embed a culture of quality and continuous improvement throughout the organization. This experience not only honed my technical and mentorship skills but also instilled in me a deep appreciation for the value of robust design. These diverse experiences gave me a holistic understanding of every stage in the product development journey i.e., from ideation and design to development, rigorous testing, manufacturing, and successful launch. This comprehensive exposure equipped me with the ideal skillset to transition seamlessly from engineering to project management. As a result, I am able to approach projects with a deep, end-to-end perspective, ensuring that every decision is informed by a thorough insight into the complete product lifecycle. This foundation empowers me to lead teams with confidence and deliver results. Inspired early by Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock, I admire his quote “The illiterates of the future are not those who can’t read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn”

I embraced the philosophy of learning, unlearning, and relearning as a career compass. Staying ahead of tech trends, I rotated projects every 2–3 years and gained early international exposure in Germany and Japan that shaped my global perspective. Continuous learning has been key to my growth, complemented by certifications in PMP, CSM, Product Management, and more.

How did you get your first break?

My first break came while pursuing MTech. I got a campus placement at TVS group, a company deeply rooted in Total Quality Management. Their commitment to precision and excellence shaped my mindset early-on by instilling a “first-time-right” approach and an eagle eye for detail that continues to guide my work today.

What were some of the challenges you faced? How did you address them?

Balancing Growth with Grounded Living
Keeping pace with technology while managing a demanding career and personal life has been a continuous challenge but one I’ve embraced with intention. I carved out dedicated time for learning, often through podcasts and structured self-study, to stay ahead in my field. As a family man, achieving work-life balance wasn’t always easy, but leveraging flexible work policies and remote options helped me stay present both at home and at work. This balance has been key to sustaining long-term growth without compromising on personal values.

Where do you work now?

Shaping the Future of In-Cabin Experiences

At Harman International, I’m part of a passionate team of engineers crafting next-generation, intelligent in-cabin systems that redefine how users interact with vehicles. My focus lies in decoding user needs and market trends to design experiences that are intuitive, immersive, and future-ready. The most exciting part of my role is being the voice of the end consumer, translating real-world insights into tangible innovations that elevate everyday mobility.

What are the skills required for your role?

My academic foundation in Mechatronics and CAD/CAM was the springboard that launched my professional journey. However, reaching my current role has been the result of a commitment to continuous learning and self-improvement. I have consistently challenged the status quo, questioned existing roles, and sought out new knowledge to stay ahead in an evolving field. I have been able to adapt, grow, and seize new opportunities. This mindset of lifelong learning and curiosity has been instrumental in shaping my career path, enabling me to evolve from a technical role into a dynamic project manager, followed by program manager and eventually a product manager.

How does your work benefit society?

I take pride in knowing that the products I help develop directly contribute to safer mobility and smarter driving decisions.
