Neharikka, can you tell us what your growing up years were like??

I’m a Delhiite, born and raised in the bustling city of New Delhi. My family is pretty much your average, middle-class setup – my father is a businessman, and my mother is a homemaker. I had my schooling at St. Thomas School, Mandir Marg, New Delhi, which was a place full of memories and friends.

When it came time to choose my subjects for higher secondary, I went with Arts. You see, I’ve been captivated by the politics and history of our amazing nation from a young age. I had this dream, a childhood dream, of becoming a lawyer. So, picking Arts was the first step towards making that dream come true.

As for my extracurricular activities, I loved taking part in debate competitions during my school days – it’s where I found my voice and a passion for expressing my thoughts. Quizzes were also a favorite of mine, always eager to learn new things. But I didn’t stop there; I wanted to make a difference too. So, I spent time teaching underprivileged children, helping them on their educational journey.

All in all, my background and early interests have led me down the path of pursuing a career in journalism. I’m ready to dive into the world of news and storytelling, bringing my unique mix of passion and experience to the table.

What did you do for graduation/ post-graduation?

I graduated with a BA LLB from GGSIPU. It was a fantastic journey where I learned a lot about the law and how it adapts to the changes in our society. I also gained a deeper understanding of how the government and other administrative departments maintain law and order.

After my graduation, I decided to take things a step further and pursued LLM in Corporate Law, still at GGSIPU. The corporate world has always fascinated me, and I wanted to delve into the legal aspects of it.

Throughout this educational journey, I’ve gained valuable insights into the legal field and how it’s essential for keeping our society in balance. It’s been an exciting and enriching experience, and I’m eager to continue exploring the legal aspects of the corporate world.

Can you talk about some of the influences that led you to such an offbeat, unconventional, and unique career?

I chose a career in law because it felt like a calling, something I was truly passionate about. The main influence behind this choice was the inner fire, the sheer zest within me, to make a difference and uphold justice through the law.

One person who has been a guiding light on my journey is Dr. Lalit Bhasin. He has been my mentor and has consistently provided valuable insights as I ventured into the legal world. Having someone with his wisdom and experience has been instrumental in shaping my path in the legal fraternity.

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered various events and turning points that have fueled my determination. One such turning point was witnessing a landmark legal case where justice was served, and it showed me the real impact that the law can have on people’s lives.

For young folks out there, I want to say that the law isn’t just a profession; it’s a powerful tool for positive change. If you have that burning passion to stand up for what’s right, to make the world a fairer place, then law might be your calling too. How did you plan the steps to get into the career you wanted? Tell us about your career path.

Planning my steps to build a career in law was a journey that I carefully mapped out, keeping a clear approach, and thought process in mind. It’s a path that’s not just about following your passion but also about gaining diverse experiences.

I kickstarted my career as a legal editor at Taxmann Publishing House, which was an amazing learning experience. Here, I honed my editorial and drafting skills, crucial tools for a lawyer. It laid a strong foundation for me.

Following that, I joined Kochhar & Co., and this was my entry into the corporate world. I was exposed to major transactions involving leading clients, working on areas like mergers, acquisitions, and helping foreign companies establish their presence in India. Additionally, I had the opportunity to advise leading airlines on their various contracts with third-party entities. This role gave me a firsthand look at how law is applied in the business world.

After my stint at Kochhar & Co., I took a leap and joined one of the Big 4, Ernst & Young (EY). Here, I was tasked with drafting and negotiating various contracts with clients. It was a role that required a deep understanding of the legal intricacies and the ability to navigate complex agreements.

My approach was to gain a well-rounded experience, from publishing and drafting to corporate law and contract negotiation. This allowed me to develop a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of various aspects of the legal field. For young people aspiring to pursue a career in law, I’d say that diversity in experiences can be your strongest asset. It not only broadens your knowledge but also helps you adapt to different challenges in the legal landscape. So, be open to different opportunities and keep building your skills. It’s a rewarding journey!

How did you get your first break?

Getting my first break in the legal world was an exciting journey, and it came through a somewhat unexpected avenue – writing books on law subjects. I penned two books, one on “Law and Technology” and another on “International Trade Law,” both of which were published by Asia’s leading publishing house, Universal Law Publishing House.

You might wonder how writing books on law helped me break into the legal fraternity. Well, it all comes down to the power of knowledge and showcasing your passion. Writing those books not only allowed me to delve deep into these legal subjects but also to share my insights with others. It caught the attention of legal professionals and experts in the field.

Through these books, I not only demonstrated my expertise but also my dedication and enthusiasm for the legal domain. It was this commitment and the desire to contribute to the legal discourse that opened the door to my first opportunity in the legal fraternity.

What were some of the challenges you faced? How did you address them?

Venturing into the legal world was an exciting but challenging journey. I faced some significant challenges along the way, and here’s how I tackled them:

  • Learning Curve: The legal field can be quite complex, and I faced a steep learning curve. To address this, I took the initiative to continuously educate myself. I attended legal workshops, seminars, and online courses to expand my knowledge. I also sought guidance from experienced mentors who provided valuable insights and advice.
  • Building a Network: Networking is essential in the legal profession, but I initially found it challenging to connect with professionals in the field. To overcome this, I started attending legal events and seminars. I also joined legal associations and online platforms where I could interact with fellow legal enthusiasts. Building these connections gradually expanded my professional network.
  • Balancing Work and Life: The legal profession can be demanding, and maintaining a work-life balance was a struggle. I addressed this challenge by prioritizing time management. I created a schedule that allowed me to dedicate time to work, personal life, and self-care. Setting boundaries and practicing self-care became crucial in maintaining a healthy balance.

Where do you work now? 

I currently work as a corporate lawyer, and it’s an exciting journey where I have the privilege of handling various clients from different industries. It’s a path that has led me to diverse experiences and unique opportunities, allowing me to make a real impact in the legal world and the business community.

In my current role, I find myself at the intersection of law and commerce, helping businesses navigate legal complexities and achieve their goals. This involves guiding them through a maze of regulations, laws, and compliance requirements, whether they pertain to labor, environmental issues, taxation, or industry-specific regulations. My role is to help businesses avoid legal pitfalls, navigate complexities, and thrive while adhering to all relevant legal standards.

Contract disputes are another common issue that crosses my desk. Businesses often engage in various agreements, and conflicts can arise. My role is to mediate, negotiate, and find practical solutions that protect the interests of my clients. This can involve complex negotiations or even representing clients in court, ensuring their legal rights are upheld and their objectives achieved.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are another fascinating facet of my work. I help companies transition through these significant changes by managing the intricate legal processes involved. This includes everything from conducting due diligence to drafting and reviewing contracts. My goal is to facilitate a smooth transition while protecting my client’s interests.

The protection of intellectual property is also a critical area. I work to safeguard my client’s intellectual property rights, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights, from infringement or unauthorized use. Intellectual property is often at the core of a business’s success, and my role is to ensure its protection.

Employment issues are prevalent, and I help both employers and employees navigate employment law, from drafting fair employment contracts to addressing disputes or concerns. By ensuring fairness and compliance with labor laws, I aim to create harmonious working relationships.

Corporate governance is fundamental in the business world, and I assist in establishing and maintaining transparent and ethical corporate governance practices. This is essential for a company’s reputation, accountability, and long-term success.

Data privacy is another contemporary challenge. I guide businesses in securing sensitive data and complying with data privacy laws to protect both their operations and their clients’ interests.

Lastly, I assist clients in selecting the most suitable legal structure for their business, whether it’s a partnership, corporation, or other entity. I help businesses make informed decisions about their structure based on their unique needs and goals.

These are just a few examples of the myriad issues corporate lawyers like me solve on a daily basis. It’s a dynamic and rewarding profession that allows you to be a problem solver, a strategic thinker, and a protector of businesses and their interests.

What skills are needed for a job? How did you acquire the skills?

To excel in a job as a lawyer, several skills are crucial. Some of the key skills needed and how I acquired them:

  • Communication Skills: Effective communication is at the heart of a lawyer’s job. I developed this skill through years of practice, both in written communication, such as drafting legal documents and contracts, and in verbal communication, such as negotiations and courtroom presentations.
  • Research and Analytical Skills: Lawyers need to research complex legal issues and analyze information. I honed these skills during my education and early career, where I was tasked with in-depth legal research and case analysis.
  • Critical Thinking: As a lawyer, you must be able to think critically, analyze problems, and find creative solutions. My legal education and practical experience helped me develop this skill.
  • Attention to Detail: The legal field demands precision, and even the smallest oversight can have significant consequences. I learned the importance of attention to detail through my legal training and by working on meticulous legal documents.

Negotiations are often a part of my day. I engage in negotiations to secure favorable terms and agreements for my clients. This can be in-person meetings or through written correspondence, and it’s a skill that I continually hone.

For those lawyers involved in litigation, courtroom appearances are a part of their routine. They represent their clients’ interests before a judge, presenting legal arguments and advocating for their clients.

Tell us an example of a specific memorable work you did that is very close to you!

One of the most memorable moments in my legal career was when I successfully facilitated a significant merger and acquisition deal for my international clients. The deal was not only professionally satisfying but also close to my heart.

In this scenario, my clients were two tech companies from different parts of the world, both with innovative products and a shared vision for the future. However, they needed someone to navigate the legal complexities and cultural differences to make the merger happen.

I played a pivotal role in bringing these companies together, ensuring that the legal aspects of the merger were executed seamlessly. It involved negotiating complex agreements, handling due diligence, and liaising with international legal teams.

Seeing the two companies unite and witnessing the excitement and potential for growth on both sides was truly inspiring. It felt like I was not only facilitating a business deal but also fostering international collaboration and innovation.
