Please tell us about yourself. How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and unusual career?

My name is Krittika Choudhury, and I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, Karnataka, India. I am from Guwahati, a small city in the North Eastern part of India. I have had to overcome several geographical barriers and regional prejudices to finally be here today, in the hallowed corridors of this University. And if given a chance, I would never change a thing about the journey that paved the path to be here.

I am currently a First Year Masters student of Biomedical Engineering. I was born into a family of engineers and doctors, and always struggled to find the right mix of both. I have always felt this need to contribute to healthcare (in one form or another) and put into practice everything I have learnt, to alleviate lives of people especially in the areas that face a geographical, economic disadvantage.

Why did you select University of Twente?

I would like to believe that I am a very focused individual. And that might not be true for much else, but when it comes to academics I am very particular about the choices I make and the decisions I follow. Due to the extra search year that is allowed in the Netherlands and ongoing research in biomedical technology in this country, I was determined to apply to only three colleges in the Netherlands. The course that best fit my requirements and areas of interest was being offered by this University, where state of the art technologies were being explored to bolster currently available technologies.

Tell us about your specialization

My specialization track within Biomedical Engineering is Neural Motors and Systems. I have always been interested in the area of Biomechanics and Biomaterials. This track gives me the freedom to discover the latest technology that is being used and apply myself to solve real time problems. I have already learnt a lot during this course, and my choices have opened up new avenues of knowledge and learning, which is what I am here for.

How was the experience studying in Netherlands?

I live in a student accommodation on campus, but the city is only a few minutes away. Therefore, it is easier for me to get to early morning classes but grabbing some ice cream from the city is also just as easy. I would like to believe that I really have the best of both worlds. Unlike where I come from, even strangers smile at you while you are rushing to class, and if that is not an insight into how wonderful the people here are, I do not know what is. The transition from India to Enschede has been smoother because of the overall atmosphere of this place, the people and their absolute warmness. Even though I have been here for only six months, my stay here has been nothing short of wondrous.
