What did you study? How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and uncommon career?

As a kid I always had a dream of wearing a white coat and having a doctor tag attached to my name.  When I got to know that patients could be treated without medicines, I decided that this is where I wanted to be.

After completing her 12th in science, Masooma went to Manipal University, Manipal, to pursue her dream of becoming a physiotherapist. She proved her passion to become one when she topped her university in 2012.  Later, she started working at a rehab Centre In Udupi during her internship where she got good exposure in treating a variety of cases. After putting in all the hard work and becoming a physiotherapist, she came back to Mumbai to start her career. However, it was not all that rosy. She was finding it very difficult to get a good job so one day she decided to run her own show and started her own setup in Lokhandwala, Andheri West in 2013.

Tell us about your career path

Back in 2006-2007, when I first decided to become a physiotherapist, people only thought about physiotherapy as nothing but massage. Thanks to my parents who were extremely supportive and sent me to Manipal University to pursue my dream.

Masooma struggled initially to get patients for her clinic. Someone less determined might have surrendered to all the pressure and given up. She, however, even while having to work for 12 hours in a day, had a clear goal in mind – to bring smiles on her patients’ faces. She always believed in herself and never gave up. Using advanced techniques and evidence-based care, she kept on assessing, diagnosing and treating a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders. Her work and results spoke about her talent and more and more patients kept on reposing trust on her. From commoners to treating celebrities, Masooma kept outdoing herself at what she does best – help people live a better life, and she has never looked back ever since.

What do you love about your work?

For me, every patient is like a board exam where I just cannot fail and this dedication helps me achieve results. My patients define me. So the only thing that keeps me going is their trust and belief in me, the smile on their faces when they can do what they once couldn’t, the blessings that they give me in return.

What do you specialize in?

At her clinic, Masooma provides a variety of treatment techniques like Dry needling, Cupping therapy, Musculofascial release therapy, Taping techniques, Chiropractic methods for the spine, Antenatal and postnatal exercise classes, instrument assisted  soft tissue mobilisation,  manual therapy, etc. She firmly believes in constant learning and upgrading of skills and that’s exactly what she keeps doing. She keeps learning new techniques to help her patients recover at a faster pace. Her future plans are to work more on preventive methods and guidelines rather than curative because she believes prevention is definitely better than cure.

I am blessed to be living this life where God has bestowed me with a blessing to help people live an independent and better life and to make a difference in their lives. Hence, I say, I am here to turn setbacks into comebacks.
