Jyoti is currently finishing her placement year studying towards a BSc in Archaeology.
“Despite taking Archaeology for A-level and doing some previous excavations, I realised that I knew relatively little compared to what the University of Bradford has to offer within the School of Archaeological and Forensic Sciences. It isn’t just excavations (which most people think archaeology is all about) but a variety of lab based courses, such as forensic archaeology and the study of skeletal remains (osteology and zoo archaeology)s, and mapping systems.”

How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and uncommon career?
Jyoti chose to study BSc Archaeology (4 years) because it allows students to do a combination of both scientific and non-scientific modules and students have the flexibility to explore many different areas within archaeology.
“The quality of the teaching and the labs are really good. In addition the work placement year is really helpful because it allows student to increase their practical knowledge as they work with career archaeologists.”
Tell us about your placements
She arranged three different placements for her third year.
“My first was working in Malta for 8 months for a commercial archaeological company called AIS Archaeology. Whilst I was there I was doing a combination of site monitoring, excavations, using ACAD drawing software, writing official archaeological reports and washing and inking pottery from roughly 8 different archaeological sites.”
She enjoyed this placement because it allowed her to understand the processes within commercial archaeology and the speed at which commercial archaeologists have to work.
“Not only was I able to explore Malta when travelling and working on site, but I was also able to see if there are any parallels between the archaeological practices in the UK and Malta.”
Her other placements were here on campus.
“I worked in the BARC (Biological Anthropological Research Centre) lab for 3 months, where I was able to help with the updating of the concordance forms for the skeletal remains as well as having the opportunity to do some osteological assessments.”
“The experiences that I gained from this placement were very beneficial because they allowed me to gain an idea of what is entailed in the profession of an osteologist.”
Her final placement is within the Iron Age research group.
“Working within the Iron Age sector has allowed me to understand the possible activities that may have happened during the Iron Age period while sorting soil samples from Sculptor’s Cave in Scotland.”
Jyoti is really excited to get started on her final year modules as well as completing a dissertation in osteology.
What are your future plans?
“Once graduated, I hope to do a master’s degree in Human Osteology as well as doing some more software training that should help enhance my careers options within the archaeological field.”
