Winner of the India Merit Undergraduate Scholarships 2014

Please tell us about yourself

I was born and brought up in Kolkata, India. I studied at Calcutta Public School, Kalikapur from preschool to the twelfth grade and thus am indebted to this esteemed institution for without the guidance and support of my teachers, I would not have been able to achieve any form of success. I took the Indian School Certificate Examinations (I.S.C.) in 2013.

How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and uncommon career?

The global reputation of the university, the structure of the course itself and the connections with the industry were the major reasons which prompted me to choose the University of Sheffield. The Civil and Structural Engineering department is one of the best in the U.K. The course itself is well-tailored and ensures that the students are completely prepared for the job after completing their degree. In addition the university has numerous activities and societies to choose from which enables all-round development.

I was ecstatic when I found out that I was selected as one of the five India Undergraduate Merit Scholarship winners for the scholarship not only recognises our academic achievements but also helps out financially. To be selected for such a prestigious award from amongst several able candidates was an absolute honour and it is one of my biggest achievements till date.

How was the experience at Sheffield?

My course is an amalgamation of various interesting modules. Despite being different, the modules are interrelated which makes them pretty intriguing. Engineering is all about applying our knowledge. The most enjoyable part of the course are some of the assignments which require us to apply the knowledge gained in lectures. For instance, ‘the bridge project’ required us to design a bridge using limited materials, using the knowledge gained in the first few weeks. We also had to consider the cost of construction. These kinds of projects enable us to relate whatever we are learning to a ‘real world’ scenario and thus, improves our understanding.

The teaching methods employed are effective and keep the students hooked. Various audio-visual aids are used which deepens the understanding of the topics. The use of the ResponseWare app not only allows us to test our knowledge but also ensures that everyone present is participating. All in all, the teaching methods used ensure that everyone learns and progresses.
The University of Sheffield is one of the top-notch institutes of the world. A degree from here is widely accredited. I think that the impeccable course structure enhances employability which is the biggest benefit of studying here. Also, the university Careers Service offers various programmes and resources which help in the development of several imperative skills. I feel that an education from here would enhance my employability potential and help me be the best I can be.

The best thing about the student life here is the perfect balance between work and play. The university offers various activities and events like the ‘Give it a go’ events which allow us to take a break from studies and enjoy ourselves. The nightlife here is amazing. There are numerous societies to choose from. In short, there is something for everyone here!

What are your future plans?

After I have finished my course, I plan to either pursue a master’s degree and specialise in a particular field of civil engineering or start working. Either way, I feel that studying at the University of Sheffield will help me achieve whatever I want to.

Advice to prospective students?

I would advise the prospective students to attend the orientation week for it helps you get to know the city and become more comfortable. Do not worry about being homesick- just attend the ice-breakers and socialise as much as possible! The city is great, the people are friendly and the university is amazing! If you are in two minds, just forget your apprehensions and choose the University of Sheffield – you will not regret it!
