Please tell us about yourself

I’m Shreya and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Writing for Performance and Publication at University of Leeds.  I did my B.A. (Honors) in English from Christ University, Bangalore. I chose to come to Leeds because of the structure of the course and the large variety of extra-curricular opportunities which promised a wholesome experience.

How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and interesting career?

What I like best about the University is the international experience and exposure. The University experience has helped me step out of my comfort zone and try new things, while simultaneously making me feel safe and at home. In the last few months, I have attended various events hosted by both the University and the Student Union. During these, I have had the pleasure to meet people from all over the world and learn about different cultures.

How was your experience at Leeds?

From a career perspective, I have gained so much from the various guest lectures both inside and outside the classroom as well as the job/volunteer fairs and career events held on a regular basis. The best thing about my course is that the modules are designed to focus primarily on my writing, thereby allowing room for my skills to develop. Aside from my course work, I am currently working on a radio play with a local radio station. I also spend time attending various student focused events, like the poetry events organised by The Scribe and meet ups organised by the Leeds PG Hub. I also enjoy travelling around the country with the Get Out, Get Active programme.

Even though Leeds is a city, I love the fact that it has a countryside feel to it. Only minutes away from the City Centre, there are various parks and abbeys that are fun to visit. Most other cities and towns are easily accessible by train and coach as Leeds is located at the heart of the country. The River Aire is my favourite thing about the city and I often go on the water taxi rides that run for free throughout the year.

I am currently staying at the university accommodation off campus. I like the quiet environment and its location makes both the University and the City centre easily accessible.
