What attracted you to the an offbeat, unconventional and unique field of nutrition and dietetics?
I grew up in a large family in India and food was always a main highlight. Early on, I knew I wanted to do something related to food and nutrition. I pursued my Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Science and Nutrition. Eventually, I got married and started all over in the United States. I finished my Masters in Nutrition Education from Immaculata University, Pennsylvania. I enjoy nutrition and dietetic counseling and cannot think of a better choice.

Describe a typical (or not so typical) day in the work life for you?
I wake up and get my girls ready for school. I consult at two different practices 3 days a week and manage my own private practice. I love the fact that my schedule varies every week. My days are filled with nutrition writing and counseling clients. Other days are filled with marketing and networking my business. I counsel clients on weight loss, weight management, hypertension, diabetes, sports nutrition and eating disorders.

How did you get your current job in dietetics?
After being a stay- at -home mom for some time, I formed my own nutrition, fitness and wellness counseling practice. My practice is more wellness based as I am an ACE- Certified Personal Trainer and a Wellcoaches- Wellness Coach. I obtained my LEAP certification and a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management.  I always knew that I wanted to have my own practice one day, where I could have the freedom of flexible schedule and management.

What skills were you born with and what skills have you learned along the way?
I have always been a self-starter. I have good time management and leadership skills. Once I set my mind to do something I make sure I give it a whole-hearted effort.  Always trying to fulfill your dreams and to staying positive is my mantra. Through Wellcoaches, I am learning a different set of skills including mindful listening, inquiry and judgment free reflections. I find myself wearing a “coach hat” and not an “expert hat” in order to give non-judgmental advice to my clients.

What advice do you have for others wanting to be just as successful and fulfilled as you?
Never lose hope and be willing to work very hard. Follow your passions and dreams and foster them into a reality. There will be ups and downs but stay motivated and love what you do.

If you could be paid for your job with something other than a paycheck, what would it be?
Gift cards to great restaurants! I obviously love food and what better way to enjoy it with family and friends!
