What did you do? Why did you choose an internship in an offbeat, unconventional and unusual area such as this?

I was a full time intern at the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, ISRO, Dehradun, where I was given the task of developing a low-cost, easy-to-use, easy-to-install, less hardware usage, high accuracy device,which was capable of tracking certain environment parameters such as the level of Carbon Dioxide, Carbon Monoxide, Mono Nitrogen Oxides – NO, NO2, and more. In other words, the device is able to monitor certain atmospheric pollutants, transfer the data continuously for the display at the interval of 3 seconds, that is being stored and updated in the database and onto the web server.

I was responsible for carrying out the entire hardware design of the device, for which I researched extensively on the hardware components to be used as well as the software part, which involved coding using Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) software. In my opinion, I contributed my part as an intern to the organization quite well, and by the end of my project, my mentor decided to assign us a new project that was also based on Arduino i.e. Glacial Lake Robotic Rover.

Even though there wasn’t much of a stipend, the internship presented me with the wonderful opportunity to work under scientists who were mighty passionate about their field of work, most of whom were conducting research on Remote Sensing & GIS (Geographical Information System) through various software and equipment. I got to experience the working of a Government organization from inside which was amazing in itself, and helped boost my confidence.

How was the experience?

The weather conditions at Dehradun were quite optimal, where the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, ISRO is located, with its strong infrastructure and AC rooms everywhere. On top of it, the amount of organization level that went into running the institute is worth-mentioning, as I never had to run from one place to the other, to get a something as small as a signature from the Dean. Everyone was well aware of the work that was expected of them, and were very eager to help anyone out regarding the same. The work culture was good, and best thing was to see and interact with the highly educated scientists, some of which were actually people from abroad, who had come down to work on Remote Sensing & GIS.

I had a very good relationship with my colleagues. All of them did their best to make me feel at home and were always patient with me. Everyone was focused on work but very relaxed at the same time, which made it a comfortable environment to work in.

I am greatly indebted to my project mentor, Mr. Prasun Kumar Gupta, Scientist-SD, Geo-Informatics Dept. for his continued support, genius guidance, sincere and valuable suggestions, encouragement and improvisation throughout the project, without which, I would not have assimilated so much and the completion of this project would have been a difficult task. I would also like to thank Mr. Kapil Oberai and Ashutosh Jha, for timely suggestions and constant encouragement that boosted up my morale and led to the accomplishment of my project work.
