Pradeep Reddy came to Vancouver from India, via Copenhagen, and at Simon Fraser University, has come up with a novel method for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease — an idea that brought him a $61,000 research fellowship from the Alzheimer Society Canada.
What did you study? How did you end up in such an offbeat, unconventional and unique career?
Pradeep received his bachelor’s in mathematics, physics and computing science from Sri Venkateswara University, master’s degree in physics from IIT Madras in India, and then worked as a research assistant in Aalborg University, Copenhagen, from 2006–2008. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Simon Fraser University. His research interests are medical image analysis, computer aided diagnosis, image processing, machine learning and pattern recognition and prediction.
Please tell us about your research
He says, “Image processing and analysis has been the thread that connects my research career, starting from detecting and analyzing defects in oil pipelines using infrared images to detecting and staging Alzheimer disease using medical images such as MRI.”
His current PhD research is on early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and differential diagnosis. This research uses advanced statistical learning tools to detect Alzheimer’s disease at its preclinical stage. If his research is successful, it could make diagnosis easier and help those affected to be able to prepare for the more dramatic effects of the disease. As our population ages, this has the potential to make a significant impact on our world.
How has the experience been at Vancouver?
Pradeep has enjoyed living in Vancouver for the last three years, saying, “I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in Canada so far. Being the land of immigrants, it’s the friendliest place I ever have been to and has provided me great opportunities to excel in my career.” He also counts photography and hiking as a hobby, and his stunning photos which combine both hobbies can be found at his photography website.
